Hoog water

Wie van plan is vandaag of morgen naar Venetië te gaan zij gewaarschuwd: er wordt flink hoog water verwacht, het roemruchte acqua alta. Weliswaar minder hoog als op de morgen van 1 december vorig jaar toen het tijdens vloed 156 cm boven het normale peil stond, maar de verwachting voor 30 november is niettemin indrukwekkend: om 8.35 uur wordt een waterstand verwacht die 130 cm hoger is dan normaal.
Op dat tijdstip zijn lieslaarzen erg handig – maar één, twee uur eerder of later volstaan gewone rubberlaarzen alweer. Zo lang duurt vloed per slot van rekening niet.
In Venetië worden de acqua altaverwachtingen precies bijgehouden. Ze worden dus ook geregeld aangepast – bijvoorbeeld wanneer er onverhoeds storm opsteekt die het water de stad injaagt.
Update, 1 december 8.23 uur:
Vandaag is het springvloed en de wind stuwt het water de stad in, om 09.10 uur wordt een waterstand verwacht van 130 cm boven het normale peil. Morgenochtend is het al minder, de verwachting voor 09.45 uur is dan een stand van 100 cm zoals op onderstaand staatje van de website van Venetië is te zien.
Daarna lijkt het ergste – in elk geval voorlopig – voorbij. Afgaand op de weersverwachting voor die dagen kun je – mits met rubber laarzen aan – ook tijdens acqua alta overal gewoon lopen, behalve misschien op het het San Marcoplein, het laagst gelegen gedeelte van de stad.

Hoi, ben benieuwd hoe het dit weekend gaat. We gaan eindelijk Venetië bezoeken en dan staat het onder water…
